Alan Diner to Head Toronto Office Global Migration & Executive Transfer Practice
Alan Diner heads Baker & McKenzie's Canadian Global Mobility and Executive Transfer Group. His practice involves advising clients on all aspects of Canadian immigration and citizenship law, with a particular emphasis on business immigration and the temporary transfer of executives, employees and into and out of Canada. Alan also assists immigrants coming to establish through the business immigration program (investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals).
Prior to joining the firm, Alan served in a variety of positions in both the public and private sectors. In his past role as the Manager of Ontario's Provincial Nominee Program, Alan helped to design and implement Ontario's first-ever immigrant selection program. Previous roles in government included coordinating the $920M Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement for the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. He also advised companies and individuals on business immigration with respect to foreign investment, with Ontario's Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (now International Trade and Investment). Alan's previous private sector experience has included practice at major Canadian law firms primarily in business immigration, as well as in international trade and competition law.
Apart from advising clients, Alan has published in a variety of legal journals and texts on immigration and international law. He has represented clients at all levels of the Immigration and Refugee Board, as well as at the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal (F.C.A.). Alan clerked for Mr. Justice Hugessen at the F.C.A. He is a former member of the National Executive of the Canadian Bar Association's Citizenship and Immigration Section. He also worked in the field of international relations at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC, and in human rights, in Jamaica and Puerto Rico.
Alan has been a frequent chair at immigration law conferences and seminars, including guest speaking engagements at numerous industry events. These have included the Canadian Bar Association, Ontario Bar Association, Law Society of Upper Canada, Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants, Canadian Association of Professional Immigration Consultants. He has spoken at numerous industry and sector events across Canada, including in the human resources, health, education, manufacturing, IT, and hospitality sectors.
Alan was called to the bars of Ontario (1995) and New York (2005). He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1990, his Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1993 and his Masters of Law (International Trade and Competition Law) from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1998. Alan speaks French and Spanish, as well as English.
