Proton open to collaboration

Proton Holdings Bhd is open to any collaboration with partners where it may derive mutual benefits, its chairman Datuk Mohd Azlan Hashim said. Talk of Proton tying up with a foreign partner was revived recently after the government said it needed a partner, less than a year after Proton called off negotiations with Germany's Volkswagen.  [The Edge]

Chery Automobile To Invest More Than RM50 Mln In New Plant

China's car maker, Chery Automobile Co Ltd, is looking to invest more than RM50 million in equipment at its new completely knocked down (CKD) plant to be built in Pekan, Pahang. Chery Alado Holdings Sdn Bhd chairman Tan Sri Cam Soh Thiam Hong said the plant, expected to be operational by end of 2009, will produce up to 100,000 units of Chery vehicles a year from 10 models including hybrids, sports utility vehicles, multi-purpose vehicles and executive cars.  [Bernama]

Malaysia Wants More Investment In R&D By Foreign Auto Manufacturers,
Says Najib

Malaysia wants to see more investments in research and development by foreign auto manufacturers here, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Tuesday. By encouraging the entry of new and important players, Malaysia wants to see continued growth in the auto assembly sector, particularly strengthening of automotive parts and components manufacturing as well as higher-end auto electronics.  [Bernama]

Proton in talks on electric car tie-up

THE Netherlands-based Detroit Electric Ltd is in talks with Proton Holdings Bhd and two other carmakers to launch electric cars here by end-2009. The cars, which will carry the Detroit Electric brand, will be built using its existing platform.  [Business Times]
