Car Vendors Propose Single Excise Duty For Car, MPV & SUV
Two associations representing car vendors have proposed that there should be no difference in the excise duty for vehicles classified as passenger car, multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and sport utility vehicle (SUV). This will benefit the government by way of higher income as the excise duties for MPVs and SUVs are lower than that for passenger car, according to the Proton Vendors Association (PVA) and Kelab Vendor Perodua (KVP). Proton urged to get foreign partner
THE Public Accounting Committee (PAC) yesterday repeated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's call last week to Proton Holdings Bhd to get itself a strategic foreign partner to continue to compete in the world market. Chairman of PAC, Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid, said that although Proton's performance had improved, the call for a strategic partnership should be considered to help build up the national car producer's capacities. General Motors To Invest US$445 Million In Thailand
General Motors, the world's biggest automaker, is investing US$445 million to build an engine plant and upgrade an existing vehicle assembly plant here (Thailand). Its chairman and chief executive officer, Rick Wagoner said the new 14,492 sq m facility would be the company's first diesel plant in South East Asia. It will produce four-cylinder diesel engines for use by Chevrolet in Thailand and other global markets. [Bernama]

GM Yet To Approach Us To Re-start Negotiations - Proton
Khazanah Nasional Bhd is the one to approach by any party keen to acquire a stake in Proton Holdings Bhd, the national car company said in a statement issued to Bernama here Wednesday. UMW to invest in new outlets
UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd has allocated RM200mil for opening new service centres, upgrading existing outlets and setting up new dealer branches this and next year. Honda aims to sell 100,000 hybrid cars in N. America
Honda Motor Co Ltd is targeting annual sales of 100,000 units of its all-new hybrid car in North America, which would represent half of its global sales goal, an executive said yesterday.The five-door, five-passenger dedicated hybrid car, Honda's challenge to Toyota Motor Corp's market-leading Prius, will be priced below Honda's current Civic hybrid, said Richard Colliver, executive vice president of Honda America.
