Ministry To Freeze New Application To Open Hypermarket

PENANG, June 8 (Bernama) -- The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will freeze temporarily new applications to open hypermarkets.

Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said the freeze was aimed at protecting wet market traders.

"The freeze is only on new applications. For applications already approved, they can proceed.

"However, the government will approve applications by state governments to open hypermarket branches," he told reporters when inspecting the Batu Lanchang public market here today.

He also said the ministry was in a discussion whether to give subsidies to ferry operators in Langkawi, Labuan and Pulau Carey following the fuel price increase on Wednesday.
